My Creative Studio: The Sparkly Space
When we moved into our house here in Colorado, there was a huge room in the basement, that had been used as a guest room. It’s big enough that it could have been a mother-in-law suite~ a room for another person to permanently reside in. It has it’s own bathroom and large storage closet.
And although I really want any guest that ever visits to know they are special to us, we’ve got other rooms that make more reasonable guest rooms. As my realtor friend, Molly, had told me when we first found this house and fell deeply in love with it- you should USE your favorite rooms, not save them for the few days of the year when you have out-of-town guests. She planted the seed that THIS room could be for me. And although it took some convincing to get my way, I GOT IT. Hallalujah!
It’s so much bigger than anything I was used to, that it took me a while to figure out what exactly to do with it. I’ve split it into two main areas- The part I’m showing you here is the side nearest the sliding door that goes to a deck- Great natural light most of the day, even though it’s technically “the basement” of our house.
The room also has a large storage closet that has plenty of room from everything— drawers stuffed with vintage trinkets, shelves of vintage handbags and shipping supplies, and still room all the stuff I use to photograph my jewelry. I’m still working on it and I hope to make it a little prettier and more organized, but it’s coming along…
There are so many things I love about my room. I LOVE that big table in the middle of the room. Fermin thought I was being ridiculous and even jokingly asked me if I was planning to teach classes or something with all that space. But I like to have a few projects going at once, so having a lot of room to spread out is ideal. I brought home lots of tables before I settled on the right one. It’s actually a kitchen island wooden top, and put 4 bookshelves underneath to support it. Economical AND functional!
I also love all the wall space, and that the main art that hangs on the jewelry side of the room, is… JEWELRY. The more things I have OUT, the more inspired I am. I’d love to figure out a way to display a lot of the things I’m currently keeping stored away in the closet. And I will. Eventually.
The house we moved from in Dallas had very little natural light. This house, and this room, is the total opposite- SO much natural light, especially on the jewelry side of the room. It’s great for when I’m making jewelry, and especially great for photo shoots! I still use a light box, but I’ve got plenty of hours of the day when I don’t have to.
THIS is my dream room. Honestly, it’s BEYOND any dream I ever had. I don’t take it for granted, and I KNOW how fortunate I am. I’m so glad Molly planted that little seed about me using this room. It’s full of all of my favorite things. And it helps me want to be creative every day.
